Lifelong Learning Through the Arts

Senior Studio courses offer lifelong learning through the arts. Talented teaching artists lead multi-session, art-making courses that build skills, offer connection and community, and improve physical and mental well-being.

Courses and supplies are free. Classes meet for 4 to 8 weeks at community-based locations. Some virtual classes are available, and we can schedule courses just for your community/residence. Call 901.272.3434 to learn more!

January 2023 - March 2023

Literature: Then & Now @ Benjamin L. Hooks Library, Jan. 23 - Feb. 27

Registration opens on January 2, 2023.

In this six-week literature class, instructor Aaron Brame will pair well-loved works of classic fiction from the American literary canon with newer works from the next generation of classic American literature. In this class we will see how certain themes in our stories and struggles continue to stand the test of time. Students are encouraged to dive into the reading for lively discussions, debates, and thinking routines.

C´╗┐lass will meet on Mondays from 1pm-3pm in room L-56 at the Central Library on the following days: 1.23, 1.30, 2.6, 2.13, 2.20, 2.27.

Abstract with Chalk Pastels @ Dixon Gallery, Jan. 24 - Feb. 21

Registration opens on January 2, 2023.

This all-levels abstract course will explore the use of chalk pastels on newsprint grade paper. Together with teaching artist John Rutkauskas, the class will focus on lines, composition, contrast, and blending. The course will meet at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens on Tuesdays from 1:30-3:30 for 5 weeks. Classes will occur on 1.24, 1.31, 2.7, 2.14, 2.21.

This class is offered by Creative Aging in partnership with the Dixon Museum and Gardens. Classes are for Shelby County, Tennessee residents age 65+.

Beginner Piano I @ Memphis Music Room, Jan. 24 - March 14

Registration opens January 2, 2023.

If you've never played a piano but always wanted to then this is the course for you! Join musician Stephen Lee of Memphis Jazz Workshop for this eight-week course. Participants will learn the beginning basics of reading and playing music on the piano.

This course is being held at the new Memphis Music Room at 5770 Shelby Oaks Dr. (formerly the Shriner Building). Classes will occur on Tuesdays from 10:15-11:15 for 8 weeks: 1.24, 1.31, 2.7, 2.14, 2.21, 2.28, 3.7, 3.14

This class is offered by Creative Aging and is for Shelby County, Tennessee residents age 65+. Thank you to the Tennessee Arts Commission for their support of community arts education!

Beginner Piano II @ Memphis Music Room, Jan. 24 - March 14

Registration opens January 2, 2023.

Has it been a while since you've sat down to play the ivory keys? Join musician Stephen Lee of Memphis Jazz Workshop for this eight-week course to refresh those skills. Using keyboards with weighted keys, this class will review basics and more to get you back to playing the music you love.

This course is being held at the new Memphis Music Room at 5770 Shelby Oaks Dr. (formerly the Shriner Building). Classes will occur on Tuesdays from 11:30-12:30 for 8 weeks: 1.24, 1.31, 2.7, 2.14, 2.21, 2.28, 3.7, 3.14

Watercolor @ Brooks Museum, Jan. 26 - March 2

Registration will open January 2, 2023.

W´╗┐atercolor artist, Susan Maakestad will teach this six week course at the Brooks Museum. The class will meet on Thursdays from 1:30-3:30 on the following dates: 1.26, 2.2, 2.9, 2.16, 2.23, 3.2. Participants will learn watercolor history, varying methods of applying watercolor to paper, and will create their own watercolor paintings.

This FREE course for seniors is supported by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission and is for residents of Memphis and Shelby County.

Women in Art @ Cordova Library, Jan. 26 - March 2

Registration opens January 2, 2023.

Join instructor Sarah Nowlin for her for six week series, Women in Art. Students will create pieces inspired by the style of various female artists that the class will focus on. 

Class will meet on Thursdays from 1:30-3 on 1.26, 2.2, 2.9, 2.16, 2.23, 3.2.

Beginner Mountain Dulcimer @ Pop-White Station Library Feb. 8 - March 1

Registration will open January, 2, 2023.

In this beginning dulcimer course, students learn basic dulcimer playing skills from acclaimed dulcimer artist Lee Cagle. Students may bring their own dulcimer or use instruments provided by the instructor. Class will meet at the Poplar-White Station Library for four weeks on Wednesdays from 1:30-3:30 for the following dates: 2.8, 2.15, 2.22, 3.1.
